On Wednesday during the 2025 Genesis Invitational presser, Rory McIlroy made a huge comment regarding LIV Golf. The 4-time major champion said that he now earns more money than he did back in 2019 after the LIV Golf’s emergence. A former PGA Tour winner later blasted him for this take.
LIV Golf has a standard purse prize of $20,000,000 for each event. The money factor has played a major role in the sport of golf being left divided. Thus, in the past few years the PGA Tour has increased the pool money in their events as well.
McIlroy, who had once been a huge critic of LIV Golf, had changed his stance regarding them last year. The North Irishman on Wednesday once again credited them and heaped praise on them for having a positive impact on the financial aspects of the game.
However, these words were not received well by former PGA Tour winner Johnson Wagner. The American called out McIlroy while speaking on Golf Channel and claimed that he was seeing things from a “finite perspective“.
The fact that he’s talking about we’ve all benefitted, like just seeing things from such a finite perspective. He is telling everybody, ‘They gotta get over it.’ Rory said some things in the last couple of seasons that have rubbed a lot of players the wrong way, and now he wants everybody to get over it… I’m a huge fan of Rory, but he’s angering me right now.

This week at the Genesis Invitational, McIlroy and his fellow PGA Tour stars competing in a $20,000,000 purse event. In his last start, McIlroy took home $3.6 million as he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am to claim his 27th PGA Tour win.
Rory McIlroy comments on LIV Golfers been potential Ryder Cup captains
In the press conference on Wednesday, Rory McIlroy was also asked about his opinions on LIV Golfers being named as potential Ryder Cup captains. The 35-year-old golfer would take his time to gather his thoughts before answering the big question.

McIlroy claimed that he would need to be convinced by them. He pointed out how Luke Donald had treated this event in the last three years and said that they (LIV Golfers) will need to treat it like Donald did to convince him.
I would have to be convinced. It would take them treating it as if Luke Donald’s treated it for the last three years, that’s what it would take to convince me.
Rory McIlroy told the reporters in the press conference
McIlroy also mentioned that LIV Golf players will need the DP World Tour membership to be in contention for captaincy. Players like Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood, who resigned from their membership while joining LIV Golf are currently ineligible for the event.

Last week, former Masters champion Sergio Garcia spoke about being named as a potential captain for the 2027 edition. While the Spaniard likes the idea of leading Team Europe, his main focus for now is to play in a few more events.
Ryder Cup, the biennial event that takes place between Team Europe and Team USA, is scheduled to take place this year at the Bethpage course in New York. McIlroy and his team will enter as the defending champions and look to win back-to-back crowns under the leadership of Luke Donald.
