The New York Yankees lost for a 4th successive time on Monday night as closer Devin Williams once again blew a save. A former Super Bowl champion would later take a brutal shot at him on social media.
The Bronx Bombers are having a tough time on the field at the moment. Their pitching and defensive plays have cost them a few games in recent times, leading to many urging for a change.
One player who has struggled in this stretch is Williams. The closing pitcher, who was acquired in the offseason through a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers, has not had the best of times as a Yankee player.
He had a struggling start to the season. Before the All-Star Break, he did find his form again and pitched well. However, his early season problems have started to resurface again.
In the game on Monday, Williams was brought in to make the save after Luke Weaver, Camilo Doval, and David Bednar tossed a perfect inning to protect the team’s one-run lead. The 30-year-old pitcher ended up conceding a game-tying home run against Joc Pederson in the bottom of the 9th inning.
To make matters worse for him, Pederson was batting with a .126 average before this home run. The third home run of the season from the former Los Angeles Dodgers star leveled the game at 5-5. Jake Bird would then concede a 3-run walk-off home run against Josh Jung in the tenth inning.
Williams has allowed at least one run in 5 of his last 7 games since the All-Star Break. He is now 3-3 for the season while having a high ERA of 5.10 for the season.

Following the game, former Kansas City Chiefs star Gehrig Dieter took a swipe at Williams. The 2019 Super Bowl Champion, who is a massive Yankees fan, expressed that he can think of 3 guys whom he would put ahead of Williams as the closer.
I can think of 3 guys that I’d put as the closer over Devin Williams #shavehisbeard

The Yankees currently have two former closers in Bednar and Doval in their bullpen. If Williams continues to struggle, manager Aaron Boone could be forced to give that role to someone else.
Devin Williams opens up about struggling season
The New York Yankees fans were hyped up last year when they acquired 2-time All-Star closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers. The right-handed pitcher, though, has struggled in his debut season with the team.

On Monday, the 2020 National League Rookie of the Year blew another save. This was another instance where Williams had difficulty getting through the opposition lineup.
While speaking with the reporters after the loss on Monday, the pitcher expressed that things have not been going well for him and the team for a while now.
Things haven’t been going well for a while. I think everyone is well aware of that. I would say I’m trying my best. Sometimes that leads to the opposite outcome you’re trying to achieve. But at the end of the day, you’ve got to get it done.

Williams, though, is not the only one who has struggled for the Yankees. The defense of the Yankees, has been another major concern for them.
They have made several defensive errors. There have been some throwing errors, misjudged catches, and poor pickups from them. Their base running has also been a bit sloppy at times, which led to former team captain Derek Jeter criticizing them and expressing that they are making too many mistakes.
The Yankees currently find themselves 2nd in the AL Wildcard standings, 1.5 games ahead of the Rangers. If they do end up getting swept once again, their opponents would leapfrog them in these standings.
