Jermall Charlo has landed himself in hot water after being arrested in Texas for driving under the influence. The boxer allegedly got into an argument with another driver while driving under the influence, according to police. Subsequently, Charlo then fled the scene as soon as the police arrived but was later arrested.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on Monday at 6:41 p.m. in the city of Galveston, Texas. The report states that Jermall Charlo was driving a Lamborghini Urus. According to police, when they tried to stop him, Charlo sped away from the scene. The police said the boxer ignored their lights and siren and ran a red light.
Their report also mentioned that Charlo appeared to be drunk when they stopped next to him. As such, Charlo was arrested on the spot and charged with three felony charges. This included ‘driving while intoxicated’, ‘fleeing a police officer’, and ‘leaving the scene of a crash’. After being arrested his blood-alcohol content (BAC) was over 0.15, which confirmed that he was driving under the influence.
He was also charged with eluding a police officer, as well as leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in at least $200 in damages. Despite all the signs of drinking alcohol, Charlo’s attorney, Kent Schaffer denies that he was using any substance. Charlo was released on $9,500 surety bonds and after the accident, it was confirmed that neither Charlo nor the other driver was hurt.
Jermall Charlo gets stripped of his WBC title
This incident has reflected on how the boxer has spiraled in terms of his personal life. Furthermore, he has remained inactive for over 1000 days even though he held the WBC middleweight title. As such, the WBC has now decided to strip him of his title. This means that he won’t be fighting Canelo Alvarez next.
Charlo’s inactivity was mainly due to his deteriorating mental health which he was spoken about openly. In response, the WBC complied with the situation by not forcing him to face a mandatory challenger to defend his title.
The WBC also stated how they still plan to support Charlo in every way possible during his troubled times. Furthermore, since Charlo was stripped, Carlos Adames was elevated into a full champion since he was the WBC interim middleweight champion.
