Coco Gauff is one of the best players in the women’s circuit. She currently sits at World No.3 and has done outstanding things on the court, but that’s nowhere compared to American legend Serena Williams, at least for now. Former WTA player Rennae Stubbs has revealed that the 21-year-old’s Grand Slam tally has been disappointing.

Gauff has cemented herself as one of the top players in the world as she continues to soar on the court. She has already won two Grand Slams at the age of 21 and three WTA 1000 crowns, which have seen her accumulate 14 tour-level titles. The American star first made a name for herself in 2019, when she reached the fourth round at the age of 15.

Four years later, she achieved her biggest dream at the US Open, where she won her maiden Grand Slam title. This was over a year after she reached the Roland Garros final before losing the title to Iga Swiatek. However, Gauff has often said that she wants to be as great as Serena Williams on tour.

At 21, Williams had won four Grand Slam titles, as her sister Venus Williams was one of her major rivals. She won three more before turning 25, and it was at that age she hit her peak as she claimed 16 Grand Slams from 25 to 35. That means she became a more experienced player, and that helped her grow in her game.

The same cannot be said for Gauff, who’s still dealing with some faults and mistakes on the court, but that doesn’t mean she won’t reach the heights of Williams. During a conversation on Rennae Stubbs’ podcast, Stubbs noted that if Gauff has to reach the Williams Grand Slam tally, she will need to win at least two majors every year in ten years:

That’s her words, not mine. She has consistently sort of put it out there and not been afraid to say that she wants to be as great as Serena Williams. And I’m like, okay, well, they won a lot of major titles when they were eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Okay, you’ve got two unbelievable, at your age to do what you’ve done. So if you want to get to twenty, you gotta win two for ten years, or you’re gonna win a lot in a short period of time, depending on how long you want to play for.

Gauff claimed her second Grand Slam at the French Open in June after beating World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. After that, she failed to reach the quarter-finals of any major event. She crashed out in the opening match of the Wimbledon Championships before losing to Naomi Osaka in the round of 16 of the US Open.

Rennae Stubbs says Coco Gauff has a very balanced personality

Coco Gauff has shown on the court that her game is far from being perfect. This season, she was criticized for her poor service game and needed to hire Aryna Sabalenka’s former biomechanics coach Gavin MacMillan. The move helped her game as she won the Wuhan Open in October after beating Jessica Pegula in the final.

During the aforementioned conversation, Rennae Stubbs analyzed that despite Gauff’s shortfalls in Grand Slam tournaments, she has a very balanced personality at such a young age. She added that the 21-year-old will view this season as a success despite winning just two titles on the court:

The other part of me is like, Coco Gauff is such a balanced human being that she has also talked about, ‘Look, I know that winning doesn’t define me as a person.’ And she talked about that a lot this year. he has got this different perspective on winning and losing as well… In that respect, she would look at this year as a success, right, and be like, I’m doing great.

Gauff will open her 2026 campaign at the United Cup, which kicks off on January 2. She will compete at the tournament alongside fellow compatriot Taylor Fritz, who will be seeking to defend the title ahead of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
