Australian GP: Drivers to face a thrilling challenge with 4 DRS Zones in new track layout at Albert Park

F1

After a 3 year hiatus, Formula One finally returns to the ‘Land Down-Under’ for the Australian GP. And the new-generation race cars will be treated to a newly refurbished Albert Park circuit. With 4 DRS zones and a faster track, drivers will be enjoying the challenge of the new layout.

The Albert Park Circuit is a motorsport street circuit around Albert Park Lake, three kilometres south of central Melbourne. The circuit uses everyday sections of road that circle Albert Park Lake and hence a majority of the circuit has not been resurfaced or changed since its debut.

The circuit has been often criticised for being a race with very few opportunities to make a pass. Adding to the outdated style of racing in a new era, changes were introduced in the 5.279 KM track. Lets find out the improvements added to the new layout.

New layout of Australian GP

Austrailian GP’s Albert Park racetrack underwent layout changes, the most notable part was the modification of the Turn 9-10 complex from a heavy right-left corner to a fast-sweeping right-left corner into Turns 11 and 12.

Further modifications included the widening of the pit lane by 2 Metres and the reprofiling of Turn 13. Also, some corners were widened such as Turn 1, Turn 3, Turn 6, Turn 7, and Turn 15; and it is expected that these modifications will reduce qualifying lap times by as much as 5 seconds.

The Australian Grand Prix will be the first to feature four separate DRS zones. These include one on the main straight, on the run to turn 3, on the run to turn 11 and a new fourth zone will be added on the newly-created straight approaching the fast chicane of turns 9 and 10.

This means there will be enough opportunities to make overtaking manoeuvres. With the new age cars’s ability to follow closely, fans will be treated to more on-track battles like the Ferrari Vs Red Bull battle in the first two races.
