“Behind Red Bull in all areas” George Russell’s bold statement about Mercedes W13
George Russell
George Russell the Mercedes Formula One driver has recently admitted that Mercedes at the moment are behind their fiercest rivals Red Bull “in all areas.”
Mercedes so far during the two races has been seen struggling for pace against Ferrari and Red Bull and currently are the third quickest team on the grid.
Both Ferrari and Red Bull have got a win to their names in 2022 whereas Mercedes has only got a 3rd place podium finish to show for the efforts of the team.
Russell has admitted that they are way behind the top two teams and have got a lot of work on their hands to close the gap to the “frontrunners“.
While talking about the deficit Russell has said, “Everything did look better when we turned the engines up for qualifying and we looked relatively on par with Ferrari in terms of straight-line speed.”
“Red Bull were definitely running less wing than we were but they seemed to accelerate very fast when they get down the straight.”
“They are seemingly doing a better job at reducing their drag at high speed and their pace at the moment is extraordinary. We need to do some work in all areas to catch up.”
George Russell has revealed that wind tunnel testing is not picking up porpoising issue
The Mercedes team has struggled with the porpoising issue throughout the 2022 season so far and it has clearly affected their straight-line speeds.
While talking about the “porpoising” issue Russell has said, “I think we’re doing everything we can back at base to try and emulate the issues we are seeing on track.”
“The wind tunnels aren’t really picking it [porpoising] up as we are on track, our wind tunnel is an isolated environment and the circuit has so many parameters at play.”
“We’ve got the smartest people in the business and we all believe in our people back at base, so I’m sure we can solve it.”
George Russell is concerned about the performance of the W13 but at the same time has shown faith in the capabilities of the engineers at Mercedes and believes that the team would be able to get on top of all their issues pretty soon.
