Guanyu Zhou the all-new entrant into Formula1 with Alfa Romeo has recently shed some light on his journey from china into Formula1.
It has been stated in GPfans that the former Formula2 driver Guanyu Zhou impressed during last season’s FP1 try-out with Alpine in Austria and on the back of the strong outing has been given a seat at the Ferrari sister team Alfa Romeo for the 2022 Formula1 season. He is going to partner with the former Mercedes man Valtteri Bottas.
During last season Guanyu became only the second Chinese driver to make an appearance in FP1 after Ma Quin Hua. However, with his arrival at Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season, he has become the first-ever Chinese driver to get a full-time contract in the sport.
Guanyu Zhou on the tough decision of leaving his native land at a young age
The career path for Europeans is well laid down when it comes to entering Formula1, however, for people like Zhou it was not easy. The motorsport infrastructure is not very good in countries like China and as a result, Zhou had to leave his country at a young age in order to chase his dream of becoming a Formula1 driver.
Zhou was recently pressed by the media to give his opinion on becoming the Chinese ambassador in Formula1 and has said “So it is very tough to be following the ladder of motorsports and arrive at where I am today.”
“Of course, there is quite a lot of compromise that needs to be taken by myself, by my family, and the team behind me.”
“I am very proud of my country and I think a lot of people want to be coming out abroad and watch me race because obviously, there is no Chinese Grand Prix this year.”
“My job is to focus on this season and to do well this season and show my full ability as a race driver.”
“I think the guys will keep supporting me from home so it is good to have them.”
The 2022 formula1 season is like the dawn of a new era for all the drivers with the new regulations coming in and it can prove a great opportunity for rookie drivers like Guanyu Zhou to stake his claim in Formula1. It is going to be very interesting to see how the rookie performs during the 2022 season.
