Haas F1 driver Nikita Mazepin says “the race is going ahead” ahead of doubts surrounding the Russian Grand Prix cancellation

Nikita Mazepin

Russian Formula One driver, Nikita Mazepin was spotted testing the Haas VF-22, on Wednesday morning during the opening day of the pre-season session in Barcelona. The Russian logged in 13 laps and is looking ahead to score his first point for Haas after a troublesome 2021 campaign.

But the Russian is not too concerned over the troubles looming in his home country as rumours emerge that the 2022 Russian Grand Prix could be cancelled. The tensions between Russia and Ukraine have been brewing for a couple of months with Russia beefing its Military presence on the Ukrainian Border.

With UEFA considering changing the 2022 Champions League Final from Saint Petersburg if the situation worsens, FIA and F1 will be monitoring the situation closely and might consider removing the Russian Grand Prix from their 23 race calendar.

Nikita Mazepin considers himself “a big supporter of sports without politics”

Russian President Vladimir Putin on 22nd February has ordered troops into rebel-held regions of Luhansk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, after recognising them as independent states. The EU, US, UK and the rest of the world will impose strict sanctions on Russia if it invades or threatens the sovereignty of Ukraine. And the absence of sports will be a natural follow-up if the condition becomes dire.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Mazepin was asked if he was still confident if Formula One will return to Russia in 2022. He said “Of course. From the understanding that we have had with Formula 1, the race is going ahead and you will surely see me there.”

“I’m not struggling at all, because I’ve always been a big supporter of sports without politics,” the Russian said. “So I’m just very happy to be in Barcelona and I hope these three days are longer because it’s a nice experience” Mazepin concluded.

This year’s Russian Grand Prix is due to be the last at the Sochi Autodrom before the event moves to the Igora Drive circuit outside St Petersburg from 2023 onwards. Russia has a contract with Formula One to host races till 2025.
