“I felt like that was in the DNA of the car,” Daniel Ricciardo opines on the strong braking system at Red Bull
Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo joined McLaren ahead of the 2021 Formula One season on a 2-year deal, replacing the Ferrari bound Carlos Sainz. He obtained his first race win with McLaren in 9 years at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix. With teammate Lando Norris finishing 2nd, it was their first 1-2 finish since the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix.
Although he has achieved a race win with the team, Ricciardo’s time with McLaren hasn’t been a major success. He finished 8th, two positions behind a younger Norris in the driver’s standings. With the first two race weekends of 2022 behind us, he is struggling with the new regulations car.
The ‘Honey-badger’ recently admitted that his old driving style and traits which he picked up from his early days in Red Bull are pretty evident in him even now. He says the car was set up according to his preference and he felt he was in the “DNA in the car.”

Daniel Ricciardo compares cars from Red Bull and McLaren
Daniel Ricciardo enjoyed his most successful spell in Formula One with Red Bull. He has achieved 8 Grand Prix victories and 29 Podiums during his spell from 2014 to 2018. In an interview with RacingNews365.com, the Aussie shared how his time with Red Bulled shaped his racing career and style of driving.
Ricciardo told “From my experience, there is some [DNA carryover] When I got to McLaren, a lot of the stuff I gave feedback on, they said, ‘Yes, this has been something that we’ve heard for the last 10 years. So there are some areas where, maybe, there is some DNA in the car.”
Referring to his years with Red Bull, in which he developed his reputation for being king of the late-breakers, Ricciardo said the characteristics of those cars played to his strengths. Ricciardo said, “I think the Red Bull was always pretty strong on braking, and that was there for the five years I was there, no matter what the regulations did. I felt like that was in the DNA of the car.”
Ricciardo said his time at Renault was hindered by many technical changes as the team went through an overhaul. He is hopeful of being able to find more confidence on the brakes under the new technical era beginning this season.
