Italian GP: Pierre Gasly Concerned After Not Seeing a Single Overtake in Sprint Qualifying

Pierre Gasly

It wasn’t a happy outing for Pierre Gasly who heads into the Italian Grand Prix as the reigning champion, as he saw himself being casted out of the sprint qualifying session on Saturday. But Gasly’s concerns do not halt after his crash, the fact that there was not even a single overtake during the entire sprint qualifying makes the Frenchmen worry even more ahead of the race-day.

As Pierre Gasly clipped the rear-left wheel of Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren he went straight into the wall of Curva Grande as his front wing unfolded underneath his car. With that being said Gasly will start the race from much behind the drivers who can score points and with the track in Monza requiring sheer pace to be able to provide a chance of overtaking, the risk is much higher.

What was Revealed by Pierre Gasly?

Pierre Gasly stated as quoted by GPFans“Obviously, [I’m] very disappointed because the start was great with the medium [tyre] and I managed to go alongside Lando [Norris] and Lewis [Hamilton] and in the first corner, I got surprised a bit with Daniel. I didn’t anticipate enough and I touched him a little bit and the wing broke. I didn’t see how bad it was but after that it just went under the car at turn three and I went straight into the wall. I could not turn.”

Asked if points were still his target, last year’s victor at Monza added, “That is the target. P14, 11 is the same thing, you will go home with zero points so we will do everything we can to at least score a point tomorrow. Obviously, watching the race from outside, which is not nice but can give you a little idea, unfortunately, I have not seen one single overtake. I will watch the race again to try and see what happened but it seemed really difficult to overtake so we need to understand why and try to improve that.

“Probably will start from the pit lane. It is a much longer race and we start next to the winner of the day so we will try to come back again.”
