Mercedes
The 2021 season saw Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton missing out 5th consecutive world championship to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen putting an end to the years dominance Mercedes had in hybrid car era. Team Red Bull was successful in negating the Power Unit performance dominance Mercedes had over the years and was able to secure the title though with the help of some controversies.
Mercedes will be hoping to regain the dominance in 2022 with the team announcing that their 2022 F1 challenger W13, the ground-effect single-seater, will be presented on February 18 in streaming and also to secure the 2022 title for themselves. But Brackley based team has concerns over their power unit will be homologated before the Bahrain GP, made in accordance with the new F1 regulations coming to affect this year.
What we know so far about the new Power Unit

Hywel Thomas, the new turbo specialist Mercedes brought in to help Mercedes to remain to be the top dog in 2022 and one of the main objectives will be to make the power unit more reliable as team Mercedes had to change their 2021 Power Unit F1 M12 E 5 times for Lewis Hamilton and 6 times for his partner Valtteri Bottas. The replacement found costly as their drivers endured grid penalty for using more than the 3 PU’s as per FIA regulations.
Team Mercedes wasn’t able to keep up the engine superiority they had over the years in 2021 as Red Bull’s Honda engineers were successful in negating their superiority which allowed Max Verstappen to secure same points as Lewis Hamilton before Abu Dhabi and secure the win at the season finisher. Though Mercedes was successful in regaining some of the superiority in the second half of the season the short span of the engines came on bite them.
Like every other team Mercedes had to make new power unit entirely different from W12’s Power unit in 2021. The M13 E Performance power unit will have a new supercharging system for Mercedes 2022 challenger. Mercedes is also in development of a new turbo compressor, enhancing the qualities of the 6-cylinder and the recharging of the hybrid which will allow to generate more performance. Team Mercedes will also be hoping that the chemists of Petronas, suppliers of gasoline for the team, will find solutions to recover the 20 Hp loss due adopting E10 fuel as per new regulations.
