Mercedes wants more than just FIA reviewing Michael Masi’s position
Toto Wolff and Michael Masi
The world of sports was taken aback when Michael Masi decided to turn the events significantly as per his whims in the 2021 Formula 1 season finale. With Lewis Hamilton losing out on his record-breaking 8th world championship, Mercedes surely could not bear this loss even when they won the Constructor’s Championship Safe to say, it feels like the Brackley-based team has lost both their titles. Avenging the same, the Toto Wolff wants justice by all means for Michael Masi’s decision.
To bring fans on the same page, Michael Masi opted to resume the race on the final lap by fast-tracking the removal of the safety car, whereas the process outlined in the rules should have meant the final lap ended under caution because of how late the lapped cars had been allowed through. With Max Verstappen being on fresher tyres, a 1-lap sprint race was enough for him to take away Hamilton’s numero uno position.
Mercedes-Michael Masi saga rages on
That being said, Toto Wolff has called for more consistency with the stewarding decisions – especially when Hamilton and Verstappen have had their on-track run-ins. For that reason, Wolff does not view the controversial ending to the Abu Dhabi GP as an isolated incident.
“It is a wider problem because if you look at most of the controversies that have happened this year, it was about sporting decisions on the track, inconsistency in execution of the regulations on track,” said Wolff as per the Race.
“Wanting to drive hard and to have difference of opinion among the drivers and among the team is in the nature of the game, but inconsistent decision-making leads to controversies, leads to polarisation. That was the ground for many of the totally unnecessary controversies on the track.”
Having said that, Toto Wolff’s Mercedes has pledged to hold the FIA accountable in that process as getting the right changes implemented is clearly the team’s main priority now it has withdrawn its intention to appeal, after the intervention of Lewis Hamilton as he did not want to win his 8th world championship in the court.
