Mercedes, Red Bull among teams below minimum weight requirements, only ONE F1 team on target

Formula One has introduced a new set of regulations ahead of the 2022 season. The changes are focused on improving the quality of racing. With an added focus on reducing the turbulent drag and ‘dirty air’ received by the cars, the changes will be providing drivers more overtaking opportunities.

According to the new regulations changes, the cars will be much heavier than their previous counterparts due to the added fuel capacity, larger tyres and safety features. The minimum weight of the cars is now 795 kilograms which is 40 Kg more than the 2021 cars.

And the recent news is that of the 10 teams on the 2022 F1 grid, only Alfa Romeo has achieved the minimum weight requirement measured during the first Pre-season Testing in Barcelona. Teams will need to achieve the weight limits ahead of the Official Pre-season test in Bahrain.

For 2022, Formula 1 is switching from 13-inch to 18-inch tires, which also feature wheel covers, and the revised product is 2.5 KG heavier for each front tire and 3 KG for each of the rears. With added safety parts aimed at reducing the effects of high-speed impact will add another 6 to 10 KG to the chassis.

According to Auto, Motor und Sport, Alfa Romeo with the C42 is the only one exactly right and McLaren with the MCL36 is not far off. While the Red Bull RB18 seems to be on the heavier end of the scale. And the team is trying to raise the bar by asking for a raise in the minimum weight requirement.

Although heavier a car, the slower a car moves across the circuit. Hence teams resort to lightweight components which will increase the cost of the car. And with a cost cap in place teams are restricted with respect to spending. That’s why teams are lobbying raise the minimum weight again before the start of the season.
