Williams all set to bid adieu to last position ahead of the 2022 season.
The Williams team was created by Sir Frank Williams in 1977 and the Williams Grand Prix Engineering has been on the F1 gird ever since. The team has claimed more consecutive championship titles than any other team on the grid, even beating Ferrari in this race.
Williams racing has seen a lot of success over the years, going down in history for its legacy but despite their glorious years, the team struggled in the recent seasons. They ended up last in the Constructors standing in three of the last four seasons, not adding any points to the overall team score.
After the family legacy was acquired by Dorilton Capital in 2020, Jost Capito was named the new team principal and CEO of Williams racing, a year after joining the team, Jost explained his respect towards the team and the pressure it brings along with it and said
Changes in Williams after the acquisition
Jost Capito had big plans for the team as he no longer wanted to see the team at the bottom of the Constructors Standing. Starting with the team, there were no significant personnel changes although some critical changes were required in order to help improve the spirits of the team and bring back the pride and respect of the team.
“It is not a feeling of ‘we are in Formula 1 and that is where we want to be’, it is Formula 1 and we want to move. We don’t accept to be last anymore. We want to move up the grid and we work hard to do that and we need the spirit and we need to enjoy that journey.” Added Jost.
The team showed significant growth and took the whole crowd by shock after their performance across 2019-2020. Even though the team scored just a single point in those years, they bounced back in style with a score of 23 on the leader board in 2021.
George Russell’s unexpected podium in the Spa Grand Prix was the team’s first since 2017 and that helped boost the energy of the team. “I think that was the main thing and then fighting for points and getting into the position that we got some points, and the icing on the cake, the podium in Spa, I think boosted not just the team on the race track but boosted the whole company,” said Capito.
Talking about the growth and development of the team over the years, Jost added, “We developed processes, we developed different structures, we improved the communication within the company so we developed objectives and, okay, ours for this year, we developed our values for the company and the behaviours we want to have in the company. So, I think we came from very much a family business to a well-structured engineering company.”
The team is all set to place their 2022 challenger on the Barcelona track for the pre-testing of the 2022 season.
