With the start of the 2022 season, a lot of teams have seemed to be facing difficulties with the pace and speed of their new challengers. While there were surprising changes in the leader board after the first Grand Prix at Bahrain, Mercedes seemed to be concerned about their role in the championship.
Andrew Shovlin, head of engineering at Mercedes seems to be doubtful of their new livery for the 2022 season as he does not see the new W13 as a championship winning car with the pace and speed at which it is performing at the moment. He says that the team needs to start working really quickly on the development of the car before they start hemorrhaging points as it not a process which will take place overnight.
Andrew Shovlin mentions what exactly went wrong in the new W13 challengers

“Pretty much everything” went wrong with the new car says Andrew. When he was asked about the problems faced with the car he said, “There’s bouncing, the balance is poor, there is a lack of low-speed grip, we’re struggling on traction, the drivability could be better, the tyre warm-up is not good enough, the car is a bit on the heavy side.” Which were confirmed during the de-briefing with the drivers.
Even now, Mercedes does not consider other teams as a threat leaving Red Bull and says “So for the championship this was a bit of a let-off, and it was good that at least Red Bull didn’t score big points as they may be the toughest competition. It is still early and it is difficult to read but from our side it was a reasonable haul of points.”
This is not the first time Mercedes is facing with this issue but this year the tension is more as compared to last year’s mishap in Bahrain, the list if thing to improve is quite big. “We are working race by race, the factory are primed to bring everything they can in the next few days. We are learning with every day, there is a lot of work going on trying to under the science of the new cars.”
“If we’ve got something useful to bring to Jeddah, we’ll make sure we get it on the car,” added Andrew.
With the cars finishing P3 and P4 in Bahrain there is certainly room for improvement and turning the cars, championship winning like.
