Australian GP 2022: Three weird things that could happen in the main race

Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton

The Australian GP is here with its new layout, injecting more pace into the race. The practice sessions and the qualifying session were not a smooth ride, which indicates that the race can be a thriller and full of obstructions, just like the sessions involved in its buildup.

We know that F1 is highly unpredictable, and weird incidents are always a possibility. But, given how the drivers have struggled and have been challenged on this track by their new cars, we may see some drastic changes in the pecking order at the chequered flag. Let’s look at some of the craziest incidents, good or bad, that can take place on Sunday during the Australian GP.

Max-Charles DNF, Lando Norris, or a Mercedes win

We’ve seen Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc fight out neatly in the first two rounds of the season, and with both of them starting on the front row of the grid on Sunday, nothing short of an epic battle is expected between the two.

However, there’s a chance both might run into each other in the moment of heat. No matter how neat they’ve fought so far, with 4 DRS zones in place, it’s probable. In that case, we might see Lando Norris winning the first race of his career with only Sergio Perez as a hurdle.

Lando, who starts P4, can be a hindrance to Mercedes’ plans, with both of its drivers lining up on P5 and P6. In the case of a fallout between Max and Charles, Mercedes would be the favorites to finish on the podium, with Hamilton taking his first win of the season.

Fernando Alonso bags a podium

Fernando Alonso will be starting P10 on Sunday. But this isn’t purely indicative of the flying lap that he was on. The Spaniard was extracting the most out of his Alpine, running a purple middle sector ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen. But, his push lap ended after he had hit the concrete. Alonso has shown that the Alpine has got great potential, and he knows how to rule with it. He can surely make up a few places if he continues his form and could bag a podium if he’s lucky enough.

Mick Schumacher wins his first championship point

The German driver and the 2020 F2 champion, Mick Schumacher, is the driver everyone is rooting for to win points. In his debut season, his best was qualifying for Q2 in the severely underdeveloped Haas.

The driver starts P15 in Australia, ahead of his teammate Kevin Magnussen. While Haas has started to look slower compared to the others, if he drives at his best and if luck favors, Mick can surely bag his first point(s).
