Gaps between teams will be closed down faster in 2022: Stefano Domenicali
Red Bull and Mercedes
Mercedes and Red Bull dominated Formula One in the 2021 season. Max Verstappen won the drivers championship, whereas, Mercedes walked away with their eighth consecutive constructors title. From 2022, a huge overhaul of changes comes into effect which is thought to encourage racing among the drivers.
With new regulations in place, a few teams could start the season on the front foot and have a clear advantage. However, F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali believes that the gap between leaders and other teams will be cut down much faster in 2022.
The CEO believes that if teams are able to identify their limitations and work on building their cars, they can turnaround the season in the second half of the racing calendar.
“It is clear that in the context of a season that starts with a new regulation and the budget cap, differences between the cars could emerge greater than what people might expect,” the CEO said to Motorsport.
“But I am equally sure that the limitations linked to the new regulations will mean that if there are these differences, the gap will be closed more quickly,” he added.
Mattia Binotto believes team reaction will be key
Mattia Binotto believes that Ferrari may not have the best car going into the season, but they will gradually develop into a better team. He stated that the performance will depend on how each team has interpreted the rules and the solutions they come up with.
Binotto suggested that their performance will be depend on a prompt team reaction, where they will address the weakness and work on their strengths.
“It may be that at the start to the season there will be difference in competitiveness between the cars, because of the ways in which each team may have interpreted the rules and the solutions they may bring,” said Binotto.
“Here what I think will be important as Ferrari is being capable of understanding weaknesses and addressing them very quickly. So it’s the team reaction that will be key,” he added.
Stefano Domenicali remains optimistic about the changes proposed for the 2022 changes. He believes that the changes could showcase the skillset of the drivers involves. Overtaking is thought to become a little easier in 2022 with better aerodynamics.
“We are facing a season in 2022 where there are so many new elements that can be characterised in a positive or negative sense,” he said.
“The ground effect cars have been designed to highlight the skills of the drivers. They are machines that should be driven, without the wake [dirty air] effect that deteriorates the tyres. The goal is to have duels between many drivers, without having the limits related to the car,” the CEO added.
