“Check my ar*e,” Pierre Gasly furiously reacts to FIA’s clampdown on drivers’ non-fireproof underwear

Niels Wittich, the race director for the Australian GP, held the drivers’ briefing, which lasted for over two hours. In the meeting, the race director talked in detail about what the drivers would be wearing underneath their racing suits.
During the meeting, Niels Wittich made his intention of strictly enforcing the dressing codes clear. He wants all the drivers to strictly adhere to the codes, such as no jewelry and only wearing underwear that is in compliance with FIA. This comes as a safety concern after a few drivers are reported to be slacking their protective gear.
This discussion prompted an angry response from the AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly when he was asked about his thoughts over the policing, as quoted by GP Fans, said, “I won’t comment on that. If they want to check my arse, feel free, I’ve got nothing to hide. My cock, everything. If that makes them happy, feel free.”
Reaction from drivers other than Pierre Gasly
Pierre Gasly wasn’t the only one who had a say on this matter. When other drivers were asked about the discussion and the clampdown on the underwear, the response seemed to be negative.
Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Daniel Ricciardo also made their opinions heard. Daniel Ricciardo said, “This was the first time I’d heard about the fireproof underwear. Obviously, we wear the leggings, if you want to call it that, but we don’t have actual underwear-underwear that’s fireproof, so that was just more of a surprise, I’d never heard of it. If it helps keep us a bit safer in those situations then, of course, I’ll invest in some. But I don’t think they make them.”
Whereas Fernando Alonso said, “I’m not too interested about these things. You know, I think we need to be flexible in a couple of these things. But it’s part of the show. I guess.”
While FIA wants to take care of drivers’ safety, it will be crucial how the governing body enforces this rule strictly as they want to. Drivers’ reception has so far seemed negative and isn’t something that can be changed easily.
