Christian Horner gets schooled over bizarre ‘good-looking drivers’ comment in an interview
Christian Horner
Christian Horner, due to his recent ill-responsible comments, has landed himself in a controversy. The Red Bull team principal was speaking on the talkSPORT show, hosted by Laura Woods.
In this interview, Horner talked about multiple things which have drawn attention. Horner’s answer to the question of his thoughts on Michael Masi’s firing was surprising. The boss said that he thinks it was a bit ‘harsh.’ He said, “I just think there was so much pressure put on the removal of Michael, and that’s not right. That’s my personal feeling.”
The other thing that got people’s head-turning was the boss saying, “Tactically we got it [Abu Dhabi GP] right. Max delivered the move and became the World Champion.” Horner holds that Red Bull outsmarted Mercedes in 2021.
However, the most bizarre thing that he said was during the time they were discussing Netflix’s F1 show Drive to Survive and the increasing popularity of the sport. His comments were immediately challenged by the show’s host, Laura Woods, in response to which he took a stance on his backfoot and agreed.
What did Christian Horner say?
While discussing Drive to Survive and the growing popularity of F1 amongst the ‘young girls,’ Horner said, “I’ve watched it, and the latest season is just coming out. I’ve seen a preview of the first four episodes, and this latest season is just insane because of the rivalry and things behind the scenes.”
“You’ve got to remember they’re making a TV show as well, but for what it’s done for the sport, it’s phenomenal. F1 is bringing in a young generation. It’s bringing in a lot of young girls because all these great-looking young drivers,” said Horner, as quoted by the Express.
After these comments were Christian Horner cornered in a way. The show host, Laura Woods, questioned the implication of Horner’s comments, to which she said, “I think maybe some of those young girls who are watching are not just inspired by the good-looking racers but may be inspired to be drivers themselves?”
Christian Horner, immediately agreeing with her, added, “Absolutely, and we’re seeing more and more girls getting involved in the sport, not just in a driving perspective but in engineering, management, and so on.”
While some of the fans are arguing whether the chief’s first comment was distasteful or not, the second part did seem like a reasonable answer on its own. As a user on Reddit shared: Female fans can have just as much passion, knowledge, and interest in the sport like everyone else, and we want to enjoy and be a part of it without having to “prove” ourselves or be accused of only drooling over a couple of good-looking men.
What needs to be kept in mind by the old fans should be that there shouldn’t be any sort of gatekeeping in and around the sport. And the ones enjoying the sport shouldn’t be shamed for their lack of knowledge of the sport.
