First day of the Bahrain testing comes to a premature end, as Sergio Perez goes off onto the gravel

The Barcelona round of testing brought to us the first glimpses and comparison of the 2022 cars designed in accordance with the new regulations. And now, Bahrain has brought us the significantly improved versions of the same cars, most notably that of the Mercedes and Alfa Romeo F1 team.
The first day of the Bahrain testing, like the other days, was scheduled in two sessions, each four hours long and separated by an hour of break in between. The last session, which was supposed to end at 04:00 PM GMT, ended approximately five minutes earlier due to Sergio Perez’s incident on the track.
The testing in Bahrain is scheduled over three days and a week prior to the opening race of the season in Bahrain itself. It has also allowed the drivers to become more accustomed to the track and should lead to closer and more intense racing next weekend.
What happened with Sergio Perez’s RB18?

Sergio Perez drove the maximum number of laps on the first day-148, putting Red Bull on top of the grid in terms of the maximum laps completed. However, it was the Mexican driver’s car that brought a premature end to the day.
Around 03:53 PM GMT, as reported by Autosport, Sergio Perez’s car went into the gravel. Autosport reports, “And Perez brings the session to a presumed end, beaching the rear of his Red Bull at Turn 8! Perez just went around at a glacial pace, let the car roll back and it unceremoniously dropped a wheel into the tiny patch of gravel. That was a bit of a damp squib.”
As the incident took place near the end of the session, it was decided the session wouldn’t resume, thus concluding day 1 in Bahrain’s testing. Tomorrow, it is expected that the reigning champion Max Verstappen will take the wheel for Red Bull and try to show his contention for the championship this season.
