Gian Carlo Minardi elected as Michael Masi’s successor for ‘this’ FIA role

The 74-year-old Italian founder and the managing director of the former F1 team, Minardi Formula One team, Gian Carlo Minardi, has been chosen as the President of the FIA Single-Seater Commission following e-voting during the latest meeting of the World Motor Sport Council. This post was earlier held by Michael Masi, who was replaced by Peter Bayer on an interim basis.
Upon Carlo’s election, FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, congratulated him saying: I warmly welcome the election of Gian Carlo Minardi as FIA Single-Seater Commission President. He is a major figure in motor sport. I look forward to working with him to further develop the Single-Seater pyramid around the world.
Minardi Formula One team was defunct in 2005 and brought by Red Bull, who renamed it the Toro Rosso F1 team, which served as Red Bull’s junior team. It was only a few years back that Toro Rosso was called the sister team of Red Bull and renamed the Scuderia AlphaTauri in 2020.
Gian Carlo Minardi’s life in motorsports

Gian Carlo, being a senior and a known name in the sport appears to be the right choice for the growth of the single-seater championships. The new role at FIA will require him to oversee the F1, F2, F3, and the other single driver championships that fall under the jurisdiction of the FIA.
Gian Carlo’s team Minardi competed from 1985 to 2005, entering a total of 340 races and bagging 38 points, as per the older system of points. After the buyout by Red Bull, their most successful year came in 2020, finishing 107 points and a victory which came at Monza.
He is also credited for the introduction of Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber in F1. Later, Alonso won two championships with Renault, and Weber finished thrice as the second-runner up and winner of FIA WEC in 2015.
