‘He had the toughest job in the world,’ Ferrari defend Michael Masi
Micheal Masi
Michael Masi came under the hammer last month, after his controversial decision at the Abu Dhabi GP. The Brazilian decided to allow the lapped cars between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton unlap themselves to set up a final lap showdown.
Lewis Hamilton, who was running in P1, was almost 11 seconds clear of Max Verstappen when the safety car was called in. The Briton was all poised to claim his eighth F1 title, if not for the safety car in the first place.
Max Verstappen decided to come into the pits, however, Lewis Hamilton decided to stay out in order to keep the track position. Hence, a final lap showdown helped Max Verstappen to attack Hamilton with a fresh set of tyres.
Ferrari team principal, Mattia Binotto has defend Michael Masi over his decision, and claims that his job was toughest in the world. Moreover, he believes that the race director’s decision will not always make all teams happy.

“Mohammed, I know him well, I know him from the past. I think [there was] always a good relationship with Ferrari. But not only Ferrari, he’s got a good relationship with the entire F1 community, which I think is important. I’m very happy to cooperate with him. I’m already in touch with him for what’s next and what are the most urgent matters for F1,” he added.
