‘Nobody is happy with third place!’ Ferrari continue to stay united after courageous recovery from rock-bottom

Laurent Mekies

Ferrari, the Italian giants, has been underperforming and Laurent Mekies admitted that the company seemed to have hit their rock bottom. But this year shall be a year of changes for Formula 1 as it goes into a regulation overhaul with more overtaking opportunities for the cars as they undergo a major aerodynamic change.

This could be an opportunity for Ferrari to take advantage of the changes and look to consolidate on its third place finish in 2021 after bouncing back from its worst finish in 2020.

Laurent Mekies said, “We feel like, as a group, when you go through a very hard time and the group stays united, which is never a given, and then, you somehow put the lowest point behind you, you start to fight your way back,” said Mekies, in an end-of-season interview.

That’s how we feel. The positive energy comes from the fact that the group stayed united in the worst possible conditions,” he added.

“Now, the real answer is how fast the car that we are able to produce is going to be, and therefore, how much of that momentum can we carry with that car to continue progressing forward? Do we need to step back again, fix and fight back?,” Mekies added.

An uphill battle for Ferrari but certainly a doable one as they look to bounce back to winning ways: Laurent Mekies

Laurent Mekies was asked in one of interviews given to gpfans as to whether there was a degree of apprehension heading into the 2022 season.

He replied, “Nobody is happy with third place and therefore, yes, as individuals, we certainly have that excitement to go and see.”

“Is it apprehension? No, because, again, we are competitors before anything else. We are conscious of the value of the opposition, and therefore, nobody thinks that it’s going to be an easy fight back from that point to winning times.”

“I don’t think it’s apprehension in the way of fears or anything. It’s really what we are here for. We are competitors. We all want to win.”

Ferrari is ambitious but also realistic of what lies in-front of them in terms of the competition. The company has quietly made positive strides in the right direction but what they lack is a string of consistent performances which could lead them back to the top where they actually belong. It’s an uphill task, but not impossible, for sure.
