Sergio Perez puts forth the RB18’s visibility issues
Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez
We got a look into the new liveries of the 2022 season of Formula One in Barcelona last week when all the 10 teams on the grid reassembled for the pre-season testing session in the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. This season has already set itself apart from its predecessors with the implementation of a completely new set of technical rules and regulations. This was also visible in the weight of the cars this season which are 47kgs heavier than the ones in the previous season making it the heaviest car that Formula One has seen in decades.
The pre-season testing period is extremely crucial for the teams to understand their flaws and work on them ahead of the first Grand Prix this season in Bahrain this month. One common concern of all the drivers on the grid this season has been the issue of visibility. The visibility issue has been caused by 18-inch Pirelli wheels along with a new aerodynamic device in order to control aerodynamic issues.
Whilst F1 drivers have long been incapable of perceiving ground directly in front of them due to modern car seat configuration, the lack of even more visibility, notably on street circuits, promises to present problems.
What does Sergio Perez have to say about the visibility issues?
On being asked how the drivers on the grid are going to tackle the visibility issue, Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Perez replied, “It is a question of time. We definitely have to get used to less visibility. We will all try to figure out how to get more but obviously there is only so much you can get in terms of seat position so we will definitely have to get used to it and make sure our position gets better.“
“[With] Wheel-to-wheel racing, I think we will all get used to it. It is going to be another challenge for this year.“
It is to note that there will be a second phase of testing ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Bahrain itself from March 10 which will go on till March 12. Mexican driver Sergio Perez will be featured alongside fellow Red Bull teammate and recently crowned world champion Max Verstappen this season too.
