WATCH: Pierre Gasly brings out the first safety car of the season after his car catches fire

Pierre Gasly's car on fire during the Bahrain GP

The opening race of the season, the Bahrain GP, has been full of events. After Esteban Ocon’s penalty of five seconds for spinning the Haas of Mick Schumacher and Verstappen and Leclerc’s battle for the win, AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly has made the highlights after his car had caught fire in the 46th lap of the Bahrain GP.

Pierre Gasly had caught fire due to overheating. After the car slowly caught fire, Gasly parked his car on the right of the track and got out safely in time. The fire marshall brought out the extinguisher quickly, minimizing the damage to the car. Initially, a virtual safety car came out, later followed by a safety car, and a green flag on the 51st lap.

Pierre Gasly’s car brought out the safety car, allowed the cars to go for fresher tires. The safety car also lead to the cars unlapping behind the safety car as per the newly defined protocols. And what followed the fire was unbelievable.

Pierre Gasly, who started P10, was looking good in the race, and the incident was unfortunate for the team and the driver. As the safety car came out, the cars showed down as per the regulations. Max Verstappen, who had put a few laps before the safety car was 30+ seconds behind the race leader, Charles Leclerc. As Leclerc pitted, Max had cut down his deficit to the leader to only a few seconds behind the safety car.

As the lapped cars unlapped themselves, and Charles and Max came wheel to wheel, the race was set for strong and intense action. The chase was on until Max Verstappen’s car suffered from technical issues.

Max Verstappen was forced to retire his car and take it to the garage. The opening race didn’t go for the Dutch as planned, and his defense for the championship title has taken the first blow from Charles Leclerc.
