After revealing their 2022 livery only at the official launch of their 2022 challenger RB18, we finally got to see Red Bull’s actual RB18 in action. This could only be made possible due to the pre-season testing in Barcelona, otherwise, it seemed that the team was adamant about keeping their car a secret as long as they could.

Red Bull’s drivers, the current world champion Max Verstappen and the Mexican Sergio Perez completed 206 and 152 laps respectively in Barcelona, providing the team with the crucial data before the Bahrain testing and GP in March. The duo looked swift on the track on all days, and Perez put up the best time of 1.19.556 on Day 3 on C4 compound tires.

After the first session of Day 3, the team’s advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, talked about the new car. The advisor said, “We set our time on the C3 tires with a car that was certainly not the lightest. But Max said from the first lap that the car felt pretty good.”

Helmut Marko talked about the grid with Motorsport-Magazin.com. The advisor said, “We believe that we are among the frontrunners.” Understandably, he’d praise his team but Helmut has also always put Mercedes at par with Red Bull ahead of the 2022 season.

But Marko also named other potential teams for the top spot. Helmut Marko said, “Ferrari seems to be strong and McLaren is there too.” The fact that Ferrari and McLaren, both, had their drivers on top of the timesheets in the testing does make them strong contenders for the title fight.

The second round of testing is to be held in Bahrain next month. Till then, Red Bull will be looking to implement quick upgrades on their car. They’ll be especially looking forward to making the RB18 lighter and dealing with the problem of porpoising.
