“We have what it takes,” Valtteri Bottas fancies a fight with former team Mercedes
Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas
Valtteri Bottas drove for Brackley-based racing team Mercedes for 5 years only to get replaced by Mercedes’ junior driver program’s first successful driver George Russell who’s a former Williams Racing driver. The Finnish driver then signed a multi-year deal with Alfa Romeo and is already making quite the wave there.
Bottas was never able to escape the shadow cast by teammate Lewis Hamilton during his time with the 8 consecutive constructors’ championship winner team. The Finn came second twice and third once in the championship, but he was always a long way behind the seven-time world champion. The Finn appeared to struggle under the strain of driving for Mercedes.
So it’s not shocking that he’s much more at ease and continues to perform admirably at Alfa Romeo. As a result, Alfa Romeo is very pleased with Bottas. “It’s not just his speed,” said Xevi Pujolar, head of trackside engineering at Alfa Romeo. “It’s mostly because of his demeanour. He exudes such enthusiasm that the entire team joins in.”
Valtteri Bottas is open to a battle with Mercedes
Valtteri Bottas instantly demonstrated his abilities in Bahrain, qualifying alongside his former teammate and slashing his replacement at Mercedes, George Russell. He ended up finishing sixth in the race, which he could have done in Saudi Arabia if he hadn’t retired in the final laps due to an uncomfortably hot engine.
The Alfa Romeo’s actual speed gives Bottas a great deal of confidence, and the Finn is abundantly obvious about his objectives for this season. Alfa Romeo is aiming for third place in the championship. “We have what it takes to take on Mercedes and become the third power behind Red Bull Racing and Ferrari. That has to be our goal now,” added Bottas.
Valtteri Bottas is going to look forward to reclaiming some points in the next Grand Prix of the season, the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park which is going to be conducted from April 7-10.
