Four Olympic-bound boxers included in Sports Ministry’s TOPS Scheme
Four boxers who are set to represent India at the Tokyo Olympic Games have been included in the Sports Ministry of India’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). The Sports Authority Of India (SAI) confirmed the same through a press release on Monday.
The four boxers who have been added include two women and two men. The women who have been added are World Championship bronze-medalist Simranjeet Kaur (60 kg) and Asian Games bronze-medalist Pooja Rani (75 kg). The men are Asian Games silver-medalist Ashish Kumar (75 kg) and Asian Games bronze-medalist Satish Kumar (91+ kg).
MC Mary Kom, Amit Panghal already a part of elite group
Simranjeet Kaur and Pooja Rani who have been added to the scheme will become the second and third boxers in the elite group of the TOPS scheme. They join Olympic Games medalist MC Mary Kom who was the only boxer in the scheme beforehand. Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Ashish Kumar and Satish Kumar join the scheme that already includes boxers Amit Panghal, Manish Kaushik and Vikas Krishan.
The Sports Authority of India also announced that three boxers Nikhat Zareen, Sonia Chahal and Shiva Thapa were moved from the Core Group to the TOPS Developmental group in what could be seen as a demotion.
