France Football condemns racist abuse towards Real Madrid’s Camavinga following Christopher Nkunku’s injury
After Christopher Nkunku suffered an injury before the World Cup, the French Football Federation (FFF) condemned racial remarks made towards Eduardo Camavinga on social media. Nkunku was forced to withdraw from the tournament in Qatar after fracturing his knee during practice on Tuesday. He could miss up to eight weeks of action as a result.
Social media users shared video footage purporting to show Nkunku getting hurt during a collision with Camavinga, which caused the Real Madrid midfielder to receive offensive messages. A statement released by the FFF on Thursday read: “Following Christopher Nkunku’s injury, Eduardo Camavinga was the victim of racist messages on social media. The FFF condemns these attacks in the strongest possible terms and is in full support of Eduardo.”
In a message to his social media followers on Wednesday, Nkunku also backed Camavinga, claiming the 20-year-old had been “unfairly targeted” and urging fans to stand together. “Yesterday evening, following the medical examinations, I had to leave Les Bleus and forfeit the World Cup,” Nkunku wrote on Twitter.
“Now, let’s get to work with one and only objective, to come back even stronger. A thought for my team-mate Eduardo Camavinga, who was unfairly targeted. The World Cup must be a moment of togetherness and not of division,” he added.

France are missing key players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar
To try to become the first country to successfully defend the World Cup since Brazil in 1962, France has endured a number of injury blows ahead of their Group D opener against Australia on Tuesday. Along with Nkunku, Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, and Paris Saint-Germain defender Presnel Kimpembe will all be absent from the competition. Kimpembe dropped out from the team on Monday.
The midfielder will not be expected to be a crucial player for France this tournament, but Camavinga will be hoping to get some minutes in what will be his first appearance for France on the big stage.
