- Frances Tiafoe has committed to an alcohol-free lifestyle and a stricter routine to improve his performance this season.
- He has already achieved 17 tour-level wins, a significant improvement from last year’s struggles.
- Tiafoe aims to re-enter the ATP top 10 by winning titles and defeating top players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Frances Tiafoe has admitted that he needed a shift in habits, which has shaped his start to the 2026 season. The American star did not hide the fact that he needed to cut alcohol consumption, adjust his diet, and adopt a stricter routine as part of a broader attempt to regain consistency on the court and push for silverware in the ATP.
By this time last year, Tiafoe was still struggling to win four consecutive matches on tour. In fact, it was at the 2025 French Open that he had a major breakthrough, reaching the quarter-finals of the clay-court Grand Slam for the first time in his career. But this year has been totally different; he has already recorded 17 tour-level wins.
The changes to his diet and routine have come amid a steady March swing. He reached the final of the Acapulco Open in Mexico but lost the title to Italy’s youngster Flavio Cobolli. At the Indian Wells Open, he reached the fourth round before losing to Alexander Zverev in straight sets.
In Miami, he knocked out the 2024 champion Jakub Mensik, which was the major highlight of his performance at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament. However, he failed to get past the eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals of the event. This present Tiafoe is a good motivation to continue on this trajectory.
Additionally, Tiafoe’s improved performance coincides with structural changes in his team, including working with performance specialist Mark Kovacs. During an interview on the Changeover podcast, the World No.18 admitted that he has not drunk alcohol for over four and a half months, and he’s excited about the work he’s putting in on the court every day:
I just needed some type of reset. I felt like I was in a space and place where I was going to go one of two ways. I was getting further away from where I want to be, further away from the ultimate goal of a Grand Slam. I had to do something different. I needed to do hard stuff again. I needed to get excited about doing the work, about showing up every day and actually putting it in… I ain’t been drinking for like four and a half months… No cheat meals, none of that.
Tiafoe made some big changes to his team last October after a disappointing run of five consecutive losses on tour. He parted ways with coach David Witt after over a year working together. The major shake-up in his team also led to long-term team member Jordi Arconada leaving that same month.
Frances Tiafoe opens up about his goal this season
Frances Tiafoe is currently in Houston for the ATP 250 tournament. The American star has always played at the tournament for the past three seasons on tour. He has reached the final of the tournament in two consecutive years, and he’s one of the favorites to win the tournament. But his focus is not only on winning the Houston Open.

Tiafoe’s vision is beyond winning a few titles only as he aims to establish himself in the elite top 10 in the ATP rankings. The former World No.10 understands that getting back into the top 10 can only be done by winning titles and defeating top opponents like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner on the court, and perhaps winning Grand Slam events:
The top 10, they young. They don’t care. They’re coming for everything. If you ain’t getting your s— right, you ain’t got no job. That’s just what it is right now. I’m not trying to be back where I was, 11 to 20. That’s not the goal. I want to be better than that. I want to give myself a real shot at the biggest titles.
Tiafoe is the second seed at the Houston Open; his friend Ben Shelton is the top seed and won it in the 2024 season. The two American stars are projected to face each other in the final of the tournament.
