Frances Tiafoe praises Ben Shelton after epic third round clash at 2024 US Open
Frances Tiafoe entered the US Open with momentum on his side, having finished as the runner-up at the Cincinnati Open. In New York, he beat Aleksandar Kovacevic and Alexander Shevchenko to reach the third round, where he locked horns with Ben Shelton.
Tiafoe entered the match having lost both his meetings with Shelton. The two met at the US Open last year, where Shelton won 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 to reach the semifinals. Earlier this year, he won 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the title in Huston.
Despite those results, the 20th seed played with resilience and dug deep on Friday (August 30), winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 in four hours and three minutes. After the match, Tiafoe praised Shelton and hoped that the fans enjoyed the exhilarating contest.
First off, I gotta say, Ben’s an incredible player. He really is. He goes for all kinds of shots, he’s got no care in the world, it’s really annoying. He’s got a great serve. He has great energy out here…He can come up with great shots, so can I. We both move really well. So its just highlight after highlight. I really hope you guys enjoyed the show.Frances Tiafoe said in his on-court interview (H/T: ATP Tour)
Although Shelton sent down 23 aces, Tiafoe carved out 21 break points in the match to his compatriot’s seven. He next faces Alexei Popyrin, who registered a huge upset by beating Novak Djokovic in the third round.
