In Short
  • Frances Tiafoe advanced to the fourth round of the French Open after defeating Jaime Faria in a five-set match.
  • Tiafoe and Faria had a heated exchange during the match, with Tiafoe comparing Faria's behavior to boxer Ryan Garcia.
  • Tiafoe will face Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth round, holding a 1-1 head-to-head record against him.

Frances Tiafoe booked his ticket to the fourth round of the French Open after another five-set battle. The American ace came from two sets to love to clinch a 4-6, 6-7(2), 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-2 win over Jaime Faria in the third round.

Tiafoe was on the verge of becoming another high-profile player to crash out of the tournament after the elimination of players such as Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, and Daniil Medvedev. But he clawed his way back into the game to inch closer to another quarterfinal appearance in the clay-court Major.

In the fifth set, both Tiafoe and Faria engaged in a heated altercation. When one of Tiafoe’s shots went wide, he went there to check the mark and also told his opponent to “relax and play“.

Faria approached the net and told chair umpire Marijana Veljovic: “You see what he’s saying?” And as the two players started arguing, Veljovic told Faria, “Okay, all of this has to stop, all of this.” The Suzanne Lenglen crowd had already started booing.

You’re trying to act like you’re tough. You’re not hard bro. Just play. Just play. Enjoy the match. You’re sitting here saying this balls out. Just play.

Frances Tiafoe told Jaime Faria

“You’re disrespectful,” Faria told Tiafoe. The former World No.10, who has set up a fourth-round match against Matteo Arnaldi (who defeated Raphael Collignon after a fifth-set tiebreaker), later compared Faria to boxer Ryan Garcia, who also reacted to the altercation on his Instagram.

No, 100 percent, I felt like I needed that too. I was up at that time, but I was still a little nervous, and he was chirping, definitely giving me a little bit of lip. He thought he was [boxer] Ryan Garcia or something. I had to let him know, ‘Just chill out and play.’ It was a little back and forth, nothing serious, but it definitely went in my favor.

Frances Tiafoe said during the on-court interview

Tiafoe is a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist. He reached the stage at the 2022 US Open and the 2024 US Open. Last year at the French Open, he lost to Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals.

Against his fourth-round opponent, Matteo Arnaldi, he holds a 1-1 head-to-head record. They met in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon, which Tiafoe won, while the Italian clinched the win when they faced off in the fourth round of the 2025 Madrid Open.

Yeah, yeah, was funny cuz I was coming coming from an injury and I was able to squeak that one out. He played well against me in Madrid. But look, man, it’s a totally different match. We’re playing a fourth round of a Major where, you know, obviously, we’re just coming from absolute battle. So, again, we’re just both going to, you know, give it all we got and see what happens.

Frances Tiafoe said at the press conference

Arnaldi also played a five-set battle in his previous round against Raphael Collignon. He also dropped a set in his first and second round matches.

Arnaldi, who has yet to win a singles title, has previously reached the fourth round of a Major twice, including at the French Open in 2024. He lost in the second round last year. At this year’s Australian Open, his run ended in the first round, while Tiafoe suffered a third-round exit.
