In Short
  • Francis Ngannou lost his son Kobe in April 2024 due to an undiagnosed brain malformation.
  • Ngannou is set to return to MMA on May 16, facing Philippe Lins under the MVP MMA banner.
  • The emotional impact of his son's death has motivated Ngannou to continue his career in combat sports.

Francis Ngannou endured a difficult life before becoming one of MMA’s top heavyweights. The Cameroonian worked in sand mines and later faced homelessness after arriving in Paris. However, tragedy struck in 2024 when Ngannou lost his son Kobe. As he prepares to return under the MVP MMA banner, Ngannou recently reflected on the loss.

Ngannou’s son, Kobe, passed away in April 2024 at just 15 months old after suffering from a brain malformation. The former UFC heavyweight champion initially kept the medical details private following the tragedy. Months later, Ngannou revealed the condition had gone undiagnosed before Kobe’s death. The devastating loss became one of the toughest moments of the Cameroonian star’s personal life.

Ngannou is set to return to MMA under the Most Valuable Promotions banner on May 16 at Intuit Dome. The knockout artist will face Brazilian contender Philippe Lins at the event. Ahead of the matchup, Ngannou appeared on UFC legend Daniel Cormier’s The DC Show and discussed his return and various topics. However, Ngannou admitted the loss of his son still affects him mentally and emotionally.

When I think about the last time I saw him, it was me leaving the apartment and going to the elevator. My brother was holding him, and he was crying, not wanting me to leave. But I just knew I was going to be back. I thought everything was going to be okay. Those are the moments you take for granted. When it happened, all of a sudden, I started thinking, “Where was I even going?” Nothing mattered. You realize that so many things that feel important in the moment really aren’t. That was the hardest moment of my life, and I know it changed me moving forward.

The fight against Lins will mark Ngannou’s return following his 2024 knockout victory over Renan Ferreira. That win earned ‘The Predator’ the PFL Super Fights heavyweight championship during his debut. However, Ngannou departed the organization in March 2026 after fighting only once during his three-year tenure. The upcoming MVP MMA event will begin a new chapter in Ngannou’s career.

Ngannou has often discussed the emotional impact his son’s death continues to have on his life and career. The Cameroonian heavyweight admitted the tragedy nearly pushed him toward retirement from combat sports. However, Ngannou instead used the loss as motivation to keep moving forward. He later got a tattoo of Kobe’s name on his left bicep and dedicated his victory over Ferreira to his late son.

Speaking with Daniel Cormier about the tragedy may have helped Francis Ngannou during his emotional recovery. DC experienced similar heartbreak after losing his daughter Kaedyn in a car accident back in 2003. The former two-division UFC champion understands the pain of losing a child and the struggles that follow. As Ngannou prepares for a return to MMA, he continues to carry both grief and motivation.

Out of all the announced names, Jon Jones stands out because of his legacy as one of MMA’s greatest fighters. Jones was also linked to a potential superfight with Ngannou during his reign as UFC champion, although the matchup never materialized. As Ngannou prepares to face Philippe Lins at the MVP MMA event, the Cameroonian heavyweight recently discussed Jones joining the broadcast team.

It’s going to be interesting to see Jon Jones in the same arena. For the Jon Jones standpoint it’s very interesting to see how it’s going to be.

However, the two heavyweight stars are reconnecting during turbulent periods in their UFC histories. Jon Jones recently announced his retirement after being left off the White House card. Meanwhile, Francis Ngannou has remained at odds with UFC CEO Dana White since leaving the promotion in January 2023. Both fighters are now entering very different chapters outside the UFC spotlight.
