The Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers put on a show for MLB fans in Game 5 of the American League Division Series (ALDS). After the game, New York Mets star Francisco Lindor dropped a 2-word reaction to sum up the action on Friday.

With the series leveled at 2-2, Game 5 was the winner-take-all game. The winners would advance to the American League Championship Series (ALCS) and take on the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Mariners, who were playing in front of their home fans, would draw first blood in the 2nd inning. A sacrifice fly from Mitch Graver off Tarik Skubal gave them a 1-0 lead. A 2-run home run from Kerry Carpenter in the 6th inning turned the game around and put the visitors in the lead.

Pinch hitter Leo Rivas, who was celebrating his 28th birthday, would hit a single in left field in the 7th inning, which tied the game at 2-2. After that, the game turned into a pitching duel between the two bullpens.

The postseason does not have the “ghost runner” rule, which automatically puts a runner on 2nd base in extra innings. As a result of this, there was no automatic runner in this game.

The two sides kept on fighting and squandered some chances to break through until the 15th inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Jorge Polanco faced off against Tommy Kahnle. After working a 3-2 full count, the infielder hit a single down the right field line, which allowed his team to walk off the Tigers and emerge as 3-2 winners.

As the MLB fandom exploded into a frenzy on social media, NY Mets’ Francisco Lindor would drop a 2-word reaction. The shortstop took to his X account to make his feelings known.

Lindor is not a part of the postseason this year. After a solid start, he and the Mets suffered a major slump and missed the playoffs on the final day of the season, following a 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins.

Mariners-Tigers Game 5 scripts MLB history

Game 5 of the ALDS between the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers scripted a piece of MLB history. With both teams trying to keep their season alive, they kept fighting and refused to back down.

In the end, the Mariners edged out their rivals in the bottom of the 15th inning. After Leo Rivas’ single in the 7th inning, it took another 8 innings for the deadlock to be broken.

The 15 innings in this game made it the longest winner-takes-all game in MLB postseason history. It broke the previous record of 13 innings set during the 2018 National League Wild Card game between the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago Cubs.

This game also turned out to be the 6th longest postseason game. The longest postseason game also involves the Mariners.

In 2022, they lost Game 3 of the ALDS 1-0 against the Houston Astros after 18 innings. This time, the Mariners are on the right side of a historic game.

They will now turn their attention towards their first ALCS appearance since 2001. After a record-breaking season that year, the Seattle-based side got crushed in the Championship Series by the New York Yankees. They will be hoping to go one better this time and reach their first World Series in franchise history.

Their task will not be that easy, though, as they take on the red-hot Toronto Blue Jays. The Canadian side knocked out the Yankees in 4 games and is hoping to reach their first World Series since their back-to-back triumphs in 1993.

As for the Tigers, it was another ALDS Game 5 disappointment. After losing against the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 last year, they have lost another away Game 5. They have not reached the ALCS since 2013, when they lost against the Boston Red Sox.
