The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed their eighth World Series crown on Wednesday night when they overcame the New York Yankees in Game 5. A huge part in this success was played by Freddie Freeman, who continued to soldier on from not only one but two injuries.

The 35-year-old first baseman had admitted that he went through an ankle injury. This injury would have a massive impact on his performances in the NLDS and the NLCS series against the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets, respectively. However, according to reports, he was battling a serious injury.

As per MLB insider Jeff Passan, Freeman played with a broken cartilage in his ribcage. This injury was far worse than the ankle injury he had.

According to Passan, after finishing a press conference, Freeman entered the batting cage and practiced his swings. Through the first few swings, he suffered some tingling in his side. On the 13th swing, the 35-year-old was hit with a major jolt that left him on the ground.

After the initial test results were inconclusive, he was called for further examination. It was revealed later that night that he had broken the costal cartilage in his sixth rib. This injury usually sidelines players for a month.

Freeman’s father would urge his son to stop playing while saying it was not worth it. However, the 8-time All-Star was having none of it and claimed, “Dad, I’m never going to stop.”

Freddie Freeman makes another piece of history with World Series triumph

Throughout the 2024 World Series, Freddie Freeman created several pieces of history. He became the first player to hit a walk-off grand slam in the World Series, joined Babe Ruth in an exclusive club, and became the first player to hit a home run in 6 consecutive World Series games. Following his triumph, he created another piece of history.

His performances in the World Series saw him being named the MVP. In the five games, Freeman hit four home runs and collected 12 RBIs, the joint most RBIs by a player in a World Series. By being named the MVP, he became the first Canadian national team player to win this award.

Though Freeman was born and raised in California, his parents, Fred and Rosemary, were both born in Canada. Due to this, the first baseman has dual citizenship.

Freeman would choose to represent Canada in international events to honor his mother, who passed away when he was ten due to cancer. The Dodgers star would also honor her during the ‘Stand Up to Cancer” moment of silence during Game 4 of the World Series.

As a result of this, he is now the first Canadian national team player to win the prestigious MVP award in the World Series. Freeman and his teammates will now be looking forward to the trophy parade on Friday in Los Angeles as they celebrate their triumph with their fanbase.
