UFC fans often enjoy watching overhyped fighters get fraud-checked during massive pay-per-view events with millions of viewers worldwide. UFC recently hosted the UFC 316 event, headlined by Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili, featuring two high-stakes title fights. On the same card, UFC’s latest signing, Patchy Mix, fought Mario Bautista and fell short in a competitive bout.
Ahead of the fight, the former Bellator champion made some strong claims and mentioned that he would destroy the ‘journeyman’ Bautista. However, the reality was way different as Mix got outclassed and lost the bout via unanimous decision. Mix’s underwhelming performance attracted criticism from UFC legend Michael Bisping, who questioned the hype surrounding the fighter after his disappointing loss.
Patchy Mix sh*t the bed. Especially after the confidence and the sh*t talk at the press conference, and the way that he just dismissed the threat of Bautista….He was beaten soundly. He wasn’t in the fight. He didn’t really do much. On the striking numbers, it was surprising because they were kind of close. But Bautista was clipping him, he was landing good shots, and every time Patchy Mix took a shot, he was pulling his face.

Bautista dominated Mix across three rounds, shutting down grappling attempts and landing clean strikes throughout the intense, one-sided contest. Mix looked flat under pressure, with poor footwork, and couldn’t secure a single takedown against Bautista’s defensive awareness. Bautista’s fluid movement, stiff jab, and volume striking displayed a perfect strategy that overwhelmed Mix from the fight’s opening moments.
With the win, Bautista extended his winning streak to eight, solidifying himself as a dangerous rising contender in the bantamweight division. On the other hand, he ended Mix’s seven-fight winning streak in Bellator against Magomed Magomedov, Raufeon Stots and others. Following the bout, former UFC champion Kamaru Usman revealed that excessive weight cut might be the reason behind Mix’s devastating loss.

Mix was disappointed with his performance and sent a fiery message to his haters, revealing that he took the fight on short notice. This was the second time this year that a former Bellator champion has faced defeat in their debut UFC fight. Previously, Patricio Pitbull lost his fight against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 314, though he is way beyond his prime years.
Michael Bisping talks about the UFC 316 main event title fight
In the UFC 316 main event, Sean O’Malley suffered his second defeat to Merab Dvalishvili, confirming his championship ceiling. ‘The Machine’ imposed relentless pressure, mixing takedowns with striking, breaking O’Malley’s rhythm and confidence early in the first round. Dvalishvili dismantled the flashy striker with suffocating control, exposing glaring weaknesses in O’Malley’s grappling.

He is currently on an impressive 13 fight win streak, joining the league of Jon Jones, Max Holloway, Georges St-Pierre in consecutive wins. His consistent performances have impressed a lot of fans as well as experts and one of them is Michael Bisping. During his latest podcast show with UFC veteran Paul Felder, Bisping shared his opinion on Dvalishvili.
Merab just went out there and closed the book on Sean O’Malley. Distanced himself from everyone else in the bantamweight division, potentially one of the greatest of all time. Finishes it this time. Sean, he stopped some takedowns and landed some good shots but Merab wasn’t deterred. He didn’t stop going forward. He basically went in there, mauled him and tapped him out in the third.

The ‘Machine’ now plans to take a short break before possibly making his return at the highly anticipated Noche UFC event. He has already accepted a title challenge from top contender Cory Sandhagen. Dvalishvili also expressed interest in a superfight with flyweight king Alexandre Pantoja, if UFC decides to make it happen.
