Almost getting ousted in the second round, 6th-seed Alexander Zverev will now look for a 4th Round when he takes on qualifier Marco Cecchinato in the third round at the French Open 2020. Cecchinato is on fire and his status of a qualifier doesn’t justify his dream run at Roland Garros.

Alexander Zverev vs Marco Cecchinato: Preview

Marco Cecchinato

Talking about the performance in the tournament so far, Zverev, after cruising past Dennis Novak in the first round in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, 6-4, looked in all sort of trouble in the next round. The 23-year old German played an exhausting, five-set thriller to edge past local favourite Pierre-Hugues Herbert 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.

On the other hand, Cecchinato, after passing the test of qualifiers, stunned 25th-seed Alex de Minaur 7-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round. The 27-year-old Italian then went on to record a handsome win over Juan Ignacio Londero in four sets 6-3, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the 2nd Round.

Alexander Zverev

Prior to their meeting in the French capital, the two men have faced each other only once. That match happened earlier this year at the Australian Open. It was a first-round contest that Zverev comfortably won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. So, the German leads the head-to-head record 1-0.

Alexander Zverev vs Marco Cecchinato: Prediction

Alexander Zverev

After getting on the brink of defeat in the previous round, Zverev has pulled back things nicely and he should at least win this encounter against Cecchinato. The US Open finalist should emerge victorious, ending the giant-killing spree of the Italian. However, it looks like Zverev will have to play another match where he loses a set, though chances are less likely that it will go the decider.

Match Prediction: Alexander Zverev defeats Marco Cecchinato in a closely-fought, four-set contest.
