A blockbuster encounter is on the cards as two heavyweights collide in a hard-hitting contest at the French Open 2020. 12th-seed Diego Schwartzman will take on defending US Open champion and 3rd-seed Dominic Thiem with the winner booking a place in the semifinals at Roland Garros.

Diego Schwartzman vs Dominic Thiem: Preview

Diego Schwartzman

Talking about the road to the quarterfinal, Schwartzman has never looked as threatening as can be seen in this tournament. The 28-year old Argentine, after crushing his opponents in the first three rounds, had another easy outing as he demolished Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16. The World No.14 is yet to lose a set in four matches played so far.

On the other hand, Thiem, after looking at his ominous best in the initial rounds, survived a huge scare in the fourth round. The 27-year old Austrian was at a time cruising in the match with two sets-to-love up before his opponent and local favourite Hugo Gaston levelled the score out of nowhere. The World No.3, though, showed his vast experience in the decider to edge past Gaston 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3 in a five-set thriller.

Dominic Thiem

Both players know each other quite well as prior to their last-eight meeting in the French capital, Schwartzman and Thiem have faced each other as many as 8 times. The Austrian has a silver spoon over Schwartzman as Thiem leads the head-to-head record 6-2. Last time both men played against each other was a round robin contest at the ATP Cup 2020 in Australia, where Thiem sailed past the Argentine in straight sets 6-3, 7-6.

Diego Schwartzman vs Dominic Thiem: Prediction

Dominic Thiem

Such predictions are never easy to make, given that both the athletes are in red-hot form. Schwartzman has been more ruthless at Roland Garros than Thiem this year, however, one should not forget that since past two years, Thiem has been the runner-up, both time losing out to Rafael Nadal. It looks like Thiem might just pull this off and end the brilliant run of the Argentine. Anyways, expect it to be a cracker of a contest which is certain to go to the decider.

Match Prediction: Dominic Thiem defeats Diego Schwartzman in a marathon, five-set thriller contest.
