French Open 2020: Kenin, Kvitova, Bouchard through to Round 3 as Pliskova sisters crashes out

The day 5 of the French Open 2020 saw Sofia Kenin, Eugenie Bouchard, Gabrine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova win their respective matches to reach round 3 of French Open women's singles.


The top-seeded players Sofia Kenin and Petra Kvitova won their respective matches to reach round 3 of the French Open 2020. The Roland Garros saw World No.2, Karolina Pliskova crash out against Jelena Ostapenko, 2017 champion.

The Canadian wild card, Eugenie Bouchard fared well in her match too. Other winners include Gabrine Muguruza, Danielle Collins who won their matches.

Sofia Kenin into Round 3

Second seed Sofia Kenin won her match against Romanian Ana Bogdan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. She cameback strong after losing the first set. She is now all set for the next round clash with Irina Bara.

Petra Kvitova tweets on victory

7th seed Petra Kvitova is now through to the third round with a 6-3 6-3 win over Jasmine Paolini. Kvitova is set to faces either Hercog or Hernandez next. She is looking to make it to the Round of 16 for the 1st time in Paris, since 2015.

Jelena Ostapenko upsets world no.2

The world No.43 was never expected to beat Karolina Pliskova, yet, Jelena Ostapenko won in straight sets. Despite trying her best, Pliskova failed to serve well and hold. She was broken at crucial points, thus lost the set 4-6. Ostapenko broke Pliskova’s serve five times, firing 27 winners in 17 games. It took her three match points before she could seat the match 6-4,6-2.

Gabrine Muguruza takes out other Pliskova

The Spaniard Gabrine Muguruza won 6-3, 6-2 over Kristyna Pliskova in 68 minutes. The match was a quick one, as Muguruza secured a Round 3 battle against Danielle Collins.

Muguruza spoke after her match , “Do I believe I have what it takes? I believe so b/c I have the certainty that I did it already. “But I had a very scary match in 1R. That shows there’s not really a favorite b/c the level in general is so high. If you’re not 100% that day, you’re not going to win.”
