French Open 2020: Pliskova, Kenin, Rybakina through to the Round 2 as home favourite Mladenovic crashes out

It was a good day for seedings as far as the women’s section is concerned as 2nd-seed Karolina Pliskova, defending Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and 14th-seed Elena Rybakina advanced to the Round of 64 at the French Open 2020, though they had to toil hard for their wins. However, in a big development, local hopes got a major shock as Kristina Mladenovic‘s campaign at Roland Garros ended in the first round itself.
Karolina Pliskova battles past qualifier Mayar Sherif
Pliskova came into this tournament as one of the favourites to lift the trophy. But now it seems that the injury she picked before the French Open will have a big say on till when the Czech remains in the draw. Though, the good news is that Pliskova made it to the second round after avoiding a shocking upset from World No.172 Mayar Sherif 6-7(9-11), 6-2, 6-4 in a pulsating contest.
Sofia Kenin made to work hard in the Round of 128
4th-seed Kenin, like Pliskova, had to dig deep before overcoming the challenge of Ludmilla Samsonova. The American had to fight her way through Samsonova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to make it to the Round of 64.
Easy win for Rybakina
Elena Rybakina, though, did not face much of a problem as she swatted aside Sorana Cirstea in straight sets 6-0, 6-3. It will be a good confidence-booster for Rybakina ahead of tougher challenges.
Kristina Mladenovic got stunned by Laura Siegemund
The upset of the day came when local hopes got crashed as Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic’s journey at this year’s French Open ended in the Round of 128 itself. Mladenovic lost in straight sets to Siegemund 5-7, 3-6 to end her campaign on a disastrous note.
