Stefanos Tsitsipas prevailed over dark horse Matteo Armaldi in four sets to earn a slot in the quarterfinal of the French Open. He came back from a set and a breakdown to win three straight sets and finish on a high, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-2.

Around the same time, Carlos Alcaraz dominated Felix Auger-Alliassime 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 to set up a meeting with Tsitsipas. Both of them are top contenders for the title and have made deep runs on the clay-court Grand Slam before. Tsitsipas’ best result has been making the final in 2021, while Alcaraz has only ever reached the semifinal.

The two stars of the ‘next generation’ have played each other five times and Alcaraz seems to have Tsitsipas’ number as he has triumphed on all these occasions. Their first-ever meeting was in the 2021 US Open when Alcaraz was just 18 and Tsitsipas was the third seed. That match proved to be the start of Alcaraz’s breakthrough as he won it in a final set tiebreak after having lost the previous set 0-6.

After that, Alcaraz has not found playing Tsitsipas to be much of a struggle, losing only one set in four matches. He has stated that he likes playing against the Greek, which Tsitsipas hopes to change as he mentioned in his on-court interview.
