Carlos Alcaraz vs. Alexander Zverev: Match Preview
Carlos Alcaraz entered Roland Garros amid concerns about his injuries, having withdrawn from two clay Masters 1000 events due to an elbow injury sustained during his defeat against Grigor Dimitrov in Miami. However, he has dispelled all doubts and appears to be back to his best.
The Spaniard reached his first Roland Garros final despite dropping a set. He lost the third set against Jesper De Jong in the second round before engaging in a five-set battle with close rival Jannik Sinner in the semi-final.
On the other hand, Alexander Zverev arrived at Roland Garros with momentum following his title win at the Rome Masters. However, he faced a challenging path to his second major final. The German had perhaps the most difficult first-round draw imaginable, facing 14-time Roland Garros winner Rafael Nadal. He emerged victorious in straight sets, becoming only the second man to defeat the King of Clay on his favorite court.
Afterwards, he was on the brink of defeat against Tallon Griekspoor but came through in the fifth-set tiebreaker. He also faced a five-set challenge from 13th seed Holger Rune before securing a four-set victory against Casper Ruud. Zverev has spent 29 minutes more on the court than his final opponent.
Carlos Alcaraz vs. Alexander Zverev: Match Prediction
Carlos Alcaraz will be dubbed the favorite to win his third Grand Slam title on Sunday, which would put him on par with Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka in the overall Grand Slam tally. However, Alexander Zverev has had the better of the Spaniard in their head-to-head meetings, leading 5-4.
Diving into their head-to-head meetings, they have played twice in 2024. The German won in four sets in their quarter-final meeting at the Australian Open, whereas the Spaniard turned the tables in a straight-set win in the Indian Wells semi-final.
The Spaniard has consumed less energy on the court and already had a massive break before Roland Garros as he was recovering from an elbow injury. On the other hand, Zverev is riding a 12-match winning streak. However, he may just run out of steam because of the amount of tennis he has played over the last month.
Moreover, Alcaraz knows how to get over the line. The Spaniard has done arguably the most difficult task in tennis, which was to beat Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final last year. Compared to that, a final against Alexander Zverev makes him a huge favorite.
Match Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in four sets.
