In his second consecutive fourth-round appearance at the French Open, Francisco Cerundolo has to face one of the biggest challenges in tennis, playing 24-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic, at a Grand Slam.
With a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 win, Cerundolo denied an in-form Tommy Paul, who had dropped a total of just 9 games in his first two rounds, entry into the next round. This is his second win against the American in five weeks, having beaten him in Madrid earlier this year.
Djokovic, on the other hand, had to endure everything Lorenzo Musetti had to throw at him for five grueling sets, which lasted over four hours. He came back from a set down after the third set to demolish the Italian’s defense and force, which he won 6-0, resulting in a final score of 7-5, 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. This match also witnessed the latest-ever finish at Roland Garros, ending at 3:07 am local time.

Novak Djokovic vs. Francisco Cerundolo: Match Preview
Djokovic and Cerundolo have never bumped into each other on the court at a tournament and this will be an interesting first encounter between the two. Cerundolo, hailing from Argentina, is predominantly a clay court player and a formidable opponent on the surface.
Djokovic has been called one of the greatest all-court players in history, achieving unthinkable feats on all surfaces he’s played on. Clay is where Djokovic has faced his biggest challenges, mainly in the form of Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros. So, it will be a test to him as he does not seem to be at his best and Cerundolo is also his highest-ranked opponent yet in Paris.
Novak Djokovic vs. Francisco Cerundolo: Match Prediction
In Grand Slam events, experience is elixir and Djokovic has the most experience amongst everyone left in the draw. However, fitness may be an issue as the 37-year-old played an extremely long match that finished very late, which may have also hindered his recovery process.
Cerundolo’s third-round match did not last quite as long ago and his youth works in his favor now. However, if Djokovic is fit enough to play, he will be the overwhelming favorite given countless such occasions where he has prevailed. It will be a closer match if the match against Musetti took a toll on Djokovic, either mentally or physically, but he will still hope to cruise into the quarterfinal.
Match prediction: Novak Djokovic to win in four sets.
