Sabalenka, after a poor campaign on the Middle East Swing, progressed to back-to-back Sunshine Double finals, losing at Indian Wells to Mirra Andreeva, and winning at the Miami Open by beating home favorite Jessica Pegula. The three-time Grand Slam singles champion continued her winning ways in the European clay swing, reaching the Stuttgart Open and the Madrid Open final.

She lost the title in the German city to Jelena Ostapenko, but was successful in winning the WTA 1000 title in the Spanish capital by beating Coco Gauff, lifting her third title in the tournament. She then arrived in Rome for the Italian Open but was defeated in the quarterfinals by Qinwen Zheng.

The Chinese ace had an inconsistent start to the season. After multiple early exits, Zheng made it to the quarterfinals of the two Sunshine Double tournaments, as well as the Charleston Open.

In Madrid then, Zheng suffered an opening round exit, following which she played the Italian Open. After beating the Belarusian in the last eight, Zheng lost a thrilling semifinal against Gauff who later became the runner-up. Zheng is bidding to win her first title of the season in the tournament.

En route to the semifinals, the 22-year-old overcame Liudmila Samsonova in the previous round. Sabalenka went past Amanda Anisimova in straight sets.

Sabalenka, on the other hand, was the semifinalist in 2023. Last year, she was defeated in the quarterfinals by Mirra Andreeva. Zheng was beaten in the third round by Elina Avanesyan.

Sabalenka is chasing her fourth Grand Slam singles title. Zheng, on the other hand, is a one-time Major finalist, reaching the championship match of the 2024 Australian Open, which she lost to Sabalenka. The 27-year-old will enter the match as the favorite to win because of her incredible form and her win-loss record against Zheng. If Sabalenka wins, she could set up a blockbuster semifinal clash with five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek, who will meet Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.

Match prediction: Aryna Sabalenka to win in three sets.
