Iga Swiatek vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Preview

Iga Swiatek entered Roland Garros after her third-round defeat to Danielle Collins in the Italian Open. The Pole, since winning her third consecutive French Open title last year, failed to move into a singles final. This season, after helping Team Poland to reach the United Cup final, Swiatek made deep runs in every tournament except in Rome. The doping scandal is considered the reason behind her inconsistent performance.

Swiatek was expected to end her trophy drought on clay. But in the Stuttgart Open quarterfinal, she lost to Jelena Ostapenko, while in Madrid, eventual runner-up Coco Gauff knocked her out in the semifinals. Swiatek lifted the two WTA 1000 titles in Madrid and Rome last year by beating World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in both finals.

Elena Rybakina, on the other hand, had an inconsistent start to the season. But the 12th seed arrived in Paris after a successful run in Strasbourg where he defeated Liudmila Samsonova to end her trophy drought.

While Swiatek is a four-time champion in the clay-court Major, Rybakina has not yet progressed beyond the quarterfinals. She progressed to the last eight twice, in 2021 and 2024. The 25-year-old is chasing her second Grand Slam title in the tournament following the 2022 Wimbledon which she won by beating Ons Jabeur.

Swiatek took home her third consecutive French Open by thrashing Jasmine Paolini in the final. En route to the fourth round, Swiatek defeated Rebecca Sramkova, Emma Raducanu, and Jaqueline Cristian. She hasn’t yet dropped a set so far in the tournament. Rybakina, on the other hand, dropped a set against her first-round opponent Julia Riera, following which, she beat Iva Jovic and Ostapenko in straight sets.

They first squared off at the United Cup in January this year which Swiatek won in straight sets. Then they were pitted against each other again, this time, in the quarterfinal of the Qatar Open, and the win helped Swiatek tie the head-to-head record to 4-4.

The five-time Grand Slam champion, however, has lost the two matches they have played on clay. Rybakina, en route to her 2024 Stuttgart Open victory, overcame Swiatek in the semifinal. Swiatek gave her a walkover in the 2023 Italian Open quarterfinal and later Rybakina reached the final and won the title after Anhelina Kalinina‘s mid-match retirement.

Because of Swiatek’s recent slump in form, she won’t be the heavy favorite going into the match. Because of Swiatek’s recent slump in form, she won’t be the heavy favorite going into the match. And given that Rybakina claimed victories in their encounters on the red dirt, she is expected to cause a major upset on June 1st.

Match prediction: Elena Rybakina to win in three sets.
