The French Open quarterfinal has pitted Novak Djokovic against Alexander Zverev, which is expected to be nothing short of an entertaining clash. Both the players progressed to the last eight without breaking a sweat.
Djokovic went past Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, while Zverev received a walkover from Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 3-0. The quarterfinal will be their second clash this season, following the Australian Open semifinal where the Serb, right after losing the first set, retired mid-match.

Novak Djokovic vs. Alexander Zverev: Match Preview
Novak Djokovic, after a mixed 2024 season (he reached only Wimbledon and Shanghai Masters final and clinched his career’s first gold medal at the Paris Olympics), arrived in Brisbane to get some match rhythm before the Australian Open where, en route to giving the walkover to Alexander Zverev in the last four, he knocked out four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic then lost two consecutive matches (in Doha and Indian Wells) before making it to the Miami Open finals but his 100th ATP title still eluded him as Jakub Mensik clinched the win after a pair of tie-breaks. Following another two consecutive defeats (in Monte Carlo and Madrid), Djokovic overcame Hubert Hurkacz to clinch the Geneva Open. In the French Open, he has not yet dropped a set.
Zverev started his campaign for the 2025 season in Melbourne, losing the Australian Open final in straight sets to World No.1 Jannik Sinner. Following his disappointing defeat, the German ace lost six tournaments on the trot without winning more than two matches.
He finally tasted success in his home tournament, the BMW Open, by breezing past Ben Shelton. After two more exits on the clay swing, Zverev entered Roland Garros to chase his first Grand Slam title.
He has so far dropped one set, against Jesper de Jong, in the second round. The 28-year-old, after making it to the US Open final in 2020, did not progress to the last stage of a Major until the 2024 French Open where, after a grueling five-set, he lost the title to Alcaraz.
Novak Djokovic vs. Alexander Zverev: Match Prediction
Zverev is one of those few players who has defeated Djokovic multiple times. The 24-time Grand Slam champion holds an edge in the head-to-head matchups as Zverev has registered five wins over him in their 13 encounters.

The 38-year-old is 1-1 in the win-loss record against Zverev on clay. Before their third meeting on the red dirt, Zverev had defeated Nole in the 2017 Italian Open final. Djokovic then outclassed Zverev in the quarterfinal of the 2019 French Open.
It’s hard to write the Serb off in Grand Slam events, because, even if he suffers early in events of 500 or 1000 categories, except for the 2024 US Open, he has made deep runs in every Major since last year. Zverev, even though he will be up against one of the greatest athletes of all time, will enter the quarterfinal as the favorite to win.
Injury, fitness, or form issues have always marred Djokovic’s run in Majors in the twilight of his career. Even though he is enjoying good form in the tournament, his age can hinder him from playing to his full potential against a player of Zverev’s caliber.
Match prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in four sets.
