Rafael Nadal, the 14-time French Open champion, will not be playing as he hung up his racket at the Davis Cup last year.

The qualifying rounds of the 124th edition of the French Open were held from May 19 and now it’s time for the main draw event. Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek will enter the tournament as defending champions.

Will Swiatek end her trophy drought on the Parisian clay? Since lifting her third consecutive and fourth overall title at the French Open last year, she has failed to reach a final. She was expected to win a title on the clay swing, but so far, it’s not been the case. Many consider the doping scandal and the criticism she faced the reason behind her inconsistent performances.

She will not be entering the French Open as the first seed since 2022, as she is dropped to the fifth position after she failed to defend her Italian Open last week. When she was struggling, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka was winning. No one on the WTA Tour has performed exceptionally well so far in the season than her.

She has reached six finals so far, including two on clay (she lost to Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart but later won her third Madrid Open title). The Belarusian has never reached the final in Paris.

But Coco Gauff has- in 2022, which she lost to Swiatek. Gauff, after losing the Australian Open quarterfinal this year, lost five tournaments without winning more than two matches. But this streak she ended in Madrid, the first clay-court WTA 1000 tournament. It was Gauff who Sabalenka defeated in the Spanish capital, following which the American ace fell against home favorite Jasmine Paolini in the Italian Open.

Paolini is another contender, for she was the runner-up last year. The Italian ace has proved that she is not an easy opponent when the matches are held on clay. Qinwen Zheng (2024 Paris Olympics champion), Mirra Andreeva (this year’s Dubai and Indian Wells champion), and Jessica Pegula (this year’s Charleston Open champion) are other favorites.

In Men’s singles, Carlos Alcaraz will be the heavy favorite, for he is a 10-time clay-court tournament champion and won last year’s French Open after winning two back-to-back five-set matches. Alexander Zverev was his opponent in the final, while World No.1 Jannik Sinner was the rival he faced in the semifinals.

Sinner is in red-hot form and given that he last week reached the Italian Open final despite it being his first tournament since the doping ban, he is expected to reach his first French Open final and set up a blockbuster clash with Alcaraz. Novak Djokovic will be entering the tournament after recently lifting his 100th ATP title in the Geneva Open.

Despite his age and his recent form issues, perhaps no one will be writing him off in the tournament. Other contenders are 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti and two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud.
