Jakub Mensik became the youngest Czech man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final on Tuesday (June 2) at the French Open. The 20-year-old is at the precipice of making history at the tournament, with just two wins away from claiming the championship. He will face World No.3 Alexander Zverev for a place in the final of the clay-court major tournament.

Zverev has been the player to beat at the French Open. With just one set dropped at the event, he has been the indisputable favorite to win the championship. It is believed that this may be his only chance of winning the elusive Grand Slam, but can he rise up to the occasion under pressure at the Court Philippe-Chatrier on Friday (June 5)?

Jakub Mensik vs. Alexander Zverev: Match Preview

Jakub Mensik won his maiden ATP title at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami last year, after beating Novak Djokovic in the final. However, after that, he failed to maintain his form and quickly dropped out of the top 20. This year, he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, but was forced to pull out of the event due to injury.

His best run on clay ahead of the French Open came at the Madrid Open, where he exited in the fourth round. In the other two clay events, he won a total of one match. But things changed at Roland Garros: the Czech star defeated Mariano Navone in five sets in the second round before beating Alex de Minaur 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. He beat World No.11 Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 before ending Joao Fonseca’s run 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(3) in the quarter-finals.

On the other hand, Alexander Zverev is yet to win a title this season, but he has reached multiple semi-finals and quarter-finals. He has been largely consistent this year compared to last, but has not been able to crown it with a trophy. He reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open before losing to Carlos Alcaraz and then fell to Jannik Sinner in the Madrid Open final two months ago.

At the Italian Open, he exited in the fourth round after losing to Luciano Darderi. But he bounced back from that at the French Open, beating Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 before crushing Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. He then put up a fight against Quentin Haley, winning 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. The No.2 seed defeated Jesper De Jong 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-1 and got the better of Spanish sensation Rafael Jodar 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

Jakub Mensik vs. Alexander Zverev: Match Prediction

Jakub Mensik had a bit of a tumultuous clay swing before arriving for the French Open. He was forced to pull out of the Monte Carlo Masters and the Munich Open due to injury and registered just three wins at the Madrid Open, the Italian Open, and the Hamburg Open, which makes his run to the semi-finals of the Roland Garros surprising.

He was expected to reach the third round of the tournament, but he has gone beyond that. After Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic crashed out before the fourth round, the French Open is now open to a new winner. Mensik and Alexander Zverev will be eager to become Roland Garros’ latest champions.

Zverev leads their head-to-head record 1-0 on tour, and they faced off at the Madrid Open two months ago, where the German star defeated the Czech player in three sets and eventually reached the final. Zverev has done remarkably well against lower-ranked players this season, but he will surely struggle against Mensik’s big-serving technique on the court.

Match Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in five sets.
