Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli have reached their first Grand Slam semi-finals at Roland Garros. Neither player was Italy’s top star at the tournament, but they have cleared every hurdle to reach this stage. Now, one of them will have to reach the final of the French Open.

Cobolli reached his first Grand Slam quarter-finals at the Wimbledon Championships last year but lost in four sets to former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. He used that experience against Felix Auger-Aliassime, coming from a set down to ensure his place in the last four in Paris. He’s two wins away from claiming his maiden major title.

Matteo Arnaldi vs. Flavio Cobolli: Match Preview

Matteo Arnaldi, currently ranked World No.104 in the men’s rankings, won just one match in the first three months of this season. The Italian star’s form got so bad that he had to play the qualifying rounds at the Monte Carlo Masters. And couldn’t make it past the qualifiers in Barcelona and Madrid.

But something changed for the 25-year-old at the ATP Challenger in Cagliari; he reached the final of the event, his first of the season, and defeated Hubert Hurkacz to win the championship. He continued with that form at the French Open, beating Tallon Griekspoor and Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets before overcoming Raphael Collignon 6-4, 6(5)-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(4). He defeated Frances Tiafoe 7-6(5), 6(5)-7, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4, and led Matteo Berrettini 7-5, 6-2 before he retired due to injury.

Flavio Cobolli, on the other hand, failed to claim a victory in his first three tournaments of the season. He finally ended the spell of defeat at the Delray Beach Open and went on to claim his maiden title of the year at the Acapulco Open in Mexico. He failed to continue with the momentum at the Sunshine Doubles, winning just two matches.

In Munich, he reached the final but lost the title to Ben Shelton. He then reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open before losing to Alexander Zverev. In Paris, he has dropped just one set, beating Andrea Pellegrino, Learner Tien, and Wu Yibing in straight sets before overcoming Zachary Svajda 6-2, 6-3, 6(3)-7, 7-6(5) in the fourth round. He defeated the fourth seed, Félix Auger-Aliassime, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the French Open.

Matteo Arnaldi vs. Flavio Cobolli: Match Prediction

Matteo Arnaldi had never reached the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament before arriving in Paris for the French Open. In fact, the World No.104 had won just two tour-level clay matches before the Roland Garros. His run at the Cagliari tournament was in the ATP Challenger last month.

Arnaldi has defied all odds to be in the semi-finals of the French Open, but can he go further by reaching the final? He faces a stern test against an in-form Flavio Cobolli, who has reached at least the quarter-finals of his last three tournaments. Cobolli has been impressive and nearly won the Munich Open in April.

He earned his first top 10 win at a Grand Slam event when he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday (June 3). He’s set to break into the top 10, should Jakub Mensik not win the French Open. However, the 24-year-old holds a 1-1 head-to-head record against Arnaldi on tour and won their last meeting at Roland Garros last year in four sets.

Match Prediction: Flavio Cobolli to win in four sets.
