FC Barcelona have been in a financial bottleneck for the greater part of the last six seasons or so. Even though their situation has improved significantly, it cannot be denied that there are issues yet to be resolved within the club. One such issue is that of Frenkie de Jong‘s, who is currently the highest paid player in La Liga!

Earning approximately €600,000 per week, the Dutchman earns more than Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid. As per reports, the club are looking to offload the midfielder, with interest coming from Manchester United and other Premier League clubs. His deal with the club expires in 2026 and despite the club’s willingness to ship him off, De Jong has shown no interest to leave them.

After purchasing him from Ajax in 2019 for €86 million, it is shocking to learn that the club are willing to let him go for a fee in the region of just €40 million. Besides De Jong, Robert Lewandowski also takes up a significant chunk of the wage bill.

It is clear that the club are in dire need of changes in their contracts if they are to bring about financial stability at the club once again.

Manchester United’s tricky situation with Frenkie de Jong

Ever since FC Barcelona got their hands on Frenkie De Jong, one particular English club has constantly been a presence in rumors surrounding the star. Manchester United have time and again presented themselves as the Dutchman’s new destination, even though De Jong has been resolute in his desire to stay with the Blaugrana.

Links to the club were further strengthened when United signed Erik ten Hag in 2022 as their new manager. Their time together at Ajax coupled with the fact that he’s already brought in quite a few members of his former squad only added fuel to the fire. Following the takeover of the club by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, it is understood that the club may finally have the funds to carry out the operation.

Despite receiving the ‘green light’ for the move, no real progress has been made as to finalize De Jong’s signing. With just a month to go till the window closes, there have also been reports that United are trying for a direct swap deal with Hansi Flick‘s side. Even though his price tag has become much more affordable, United will have to pay his ‘extremely high’ wages to lure him from the Spanish giants.
